Sometimes life can get a little overwhelming. With so many moving parts to organize and manage, I think we all feel a bit stressed at times. Whether it’s school, work, money, people, or just LIFE that is pushing me to my limit, I find that taking a step back for a moment to focus on the positives can be one of the best remedies.
So, my advice to you when there is a knot of anxiety sitting in your stomach is to simply take a moment to reflect on what is making you happy right at this moment, this day, this week, this month. I’m sharing my list below as an example of how easy it is to list 10 things—big, small, silly, serious, nonsensical, or poetic—that lift your spirits and push all your stressors to the back of your mind. Seriously, just write whatever comes to mind; no explanation is necessary! Once you start, you’ll find that it is difficult to cut yourself off at just ten things!
Without further ado, here are 10 things, in no particular order, that make me happy:
1. Decorative pillows
2. When my brother tags me in memes
3. Golden light shining onto the Bridgers
4. Peanut M&Ms
5. Hours long chats with lifelong friends
6. Travel Instas
7. A fully charged phone
8. That after-workout adrenaline high
9. Gold foil and shades of blue
10. Making fun of people on HGTV’s House Hunters
As you can see, I covered a very wide range of “things” in my list. The best part of this exercise is that you can do it each day, or more than once a day, and your list has the potential to never be the same. Not only is your list going to be unique to you, but it will be unique to the moment that you’re writing it in. For example, one day you might write that the sun shining in the middle of a big blue sky makes you happy, but on a different day, rain pouring from a grey ceiling of clouds will end up on your list!
Make your list whatever you want it to be; no matter what you write, the act of focusing on the positives that surround you will have a noticeable impact on your mood—at least for a little while!
