While every college freshman knows the importance of shower shoes, command hooks, and power strips for dorm life, not many realize that good beauty products are also essential. Stress, a new environment, and a less-than-ideal shower situation can wreak havoc on your beauty routine, so it’s definitely worth it to spend a little extra money and time to find haircare and skincare products that will withstand the changes that living in a dorm bring. Below are a few of the products I used when I lived in the dorms to keep my hair and skin looking and feeling good!
Davines shampoo and conditioner
Dorm water pressure and water quality is not great, so you’re going to want to have a shampoo and conditioner that can keep your hair clean and gorgeous. I really like the Davines brand as a whole, and I used the OI Shampoo and Conditioner for the first few months of my freshman year. I loved how soft and silky my hair felt when I used these! Now, I use the Melu shampoo, and I love it, too!
Davines OI All In One Milk
I don’t use product in my hair normally, but this is the one exception! This spray is seriously an all-in-one miracle worker; it detangles, de-frizzes, makes hair shiny, acts as a leave-in conditioner, and so many more awesome things! A few sprays does a great job at making your hair feel amazing!
Keratin Treatment/Brazilian Blowout
The dorm I was in didn’t have a great water softener (or maybe it didn’t even have one), so my hair felt really dry and frizzy. I decided to get a keratin treatment, AKA Brazilian Blowout, in the hopes that my hair would be softer, shinier, and smoother. I got mine done from Marci Schloss at Boho Boze, and it did all the things that I hoped it would! While a bit on the pricier side for a college student, it made a huge difference on the texture of my hair. After I got the treatment in November, I used the shampoo and conditioner that comes with it, and while I like the Davines brand better, it was still effective in keeping my hair clean.
Batiste Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a must-have for those days when you can’t be bothered to walk down the hall to wash your hair. It extends the life of your last shampoo for at least a day, and this brand makes your hair smell great, too! Since I have dark hair, I really appreciate the brown tint of this one that counteracts the usual telltale signs of dry shampoo.
Avéne Cleanance Facewash
I first tried the Avéne Cleansing Gel face and body wash through a sample I got in Birchbox a couple years ago, and I ended up loving it! While it’s pretty expensive, it really does work well without being harsh on my skin. I’ve struggled with acne since junior high, but Avéne is the brand I have found that helps me control it gently and consistently.
Avéne Skin Recovery Cream Moisturizer
The moisturizer from Avéne is a lifesaver with dorm water, too. An effective moisturizer is a must-have for everyone, but when you’re washing your face with hard-water, it becomes even more important. This Avéne one feels light and refreshing while providing a hydrating boost for sensitive skin.
Venus Spa Breeze Razor
When you have to carry all your stuff down the hall to take a shower, the less items you have to take, the better—even when you’ve got a shower caddy. These razors eliminate the need for shaving cream, so they’re perfect for dorm life! Each cartridge lasts for a few shaves, and they work just as effectively as a regular razor with shaving cream. Pro Tip: Find them at Costco; you can get 12 cartridges for the same price as a 6-pack at Target or Walmart.
Adjusting to life in the dorms can be a little tough, and finding the right beauty products to do the job is only one aspect of the many challenges. If you’re struggling, give these products a try, and let me know how they work out for you!
